For a Major in Sociology
Courses: For the major, a minimum of 36 points is required as follows:
Seminars: (3 points) All majors are required to take the fall semester of the Senior seminar (SOCI W3995) in their senior year. Seniors writing an honors thesis must also take the spring semester of the Senior seminar (SOCI W3996) which can be counted as one of the two required advanced courses.
Related Courses: At least 6 points at the 3000 level or higher in anthropology, economics, history, political science or psychology. Certain quantitative courses in economics, psychology, and statistics at the 1000 level are acceptable with the approval of the director of undergraduate studies.

Program of study: The requirements for the concentration in sociology are substantially the same as those for the major. The senior seminar and the 6 points of related courses are not required for a sociology concentration.
Courses: For the concentration, a minimum of 27 points is required:

Courses: 15 points within the department, including 9 points chosen from the required set of 4 courses (V1202, V1205, V3100, and V3212).


The department offers three levels of courses:
General introductory courses (1000-level courses): Either of the following courses is an appropriate first course in the department; no prior sociology courses are required for enrollment: SOCI V1202 or V1205.
Specialized introductory courses (3000-level courses): These require no prior sociology course work. Some of these courses may be of special interest to pre-professional students: SOCI V3216, V3225, V3228, W3275, and W3680.
Advanced courses (4000-level courses): Specific prerequisites are listed for SOCI V3100, V3222, and V3212. The 4000-level courses are open to advanced undergraduates who have the appropriate preparation and the instructor’s permission. Other sociology courses at the 4000 and 6000 levels, listed in the bulletin of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, may be taken with permission of the director of undergraduate studies and the instructor.
Seminars: Seminar credit may be obtained by taking SOCI W3995 or W3996 or, with the permission of a faculty sponsor, SOCI C3998 or C3999. Other currently scheduled 3000-level seminars include SOCI W3945, W3990, and W3994.
